Open Door is my absolute favourite charity shop. Based on Allerton Road in South Liverpool, it stocks the best of the best. People donate the “good stuff” to them specifically because their reputation of understanding fashion and branding speaks for itself. They really do have an open door as well, I often go in for a chat and for my little girl to try on the highest heels she can find and accessorise herself to the max!
The charity that Open Door are part of is the Whitechapel Centre. They are the leading homeless charity in Liverpool and the money raised from Open Door goes towards providing much needed services to the city’s homeless community. Knowing that the team are equally passionate about why they are doing this is another reason they are my go to charity shop.
“Think of a charity shop. What springs to mind? Fighting your way through rack and rails of pedestrian clothing to find a vintage gem. Shelves of bric-a- brac, with that one Babycham glass tucked away at the back. Our high street is bustling with this kind of charity shop, and I love them. That thrill you get when striking gold.
Open Door had to find a way to be heard amongst the more established charity shops. Our only way to do this was to offer something different.
We are lucky. Liverpool is an extremely generous and fashion loving city. Open Door arose from the amount donations received by The Whitechapel Centre. We had so many clothes left over when the service users had taken what they needed, it made sense to put them them to good use. This helps us to raise funds for the centre as well as raising awareness.
We wanted to create a shop that feels and looks like a boutique. Our rails are often stocked with contemporary brands from Topshop, Asos, Zara and Urban Outfitters. As well as the amazing donations we get from our fabulous doners, we have recently we have started to receive regular donations from Shop Direct, giving us that extra edge.
The shop has created a buzz in the local community. It’s amazing. From the regular Monday morning Mum, sporting her Open Door tote and grabbing some well earned retail time after dropping the kids off to the fashion lover who sits watching our Instagram feed, waiting to pounce.
At Open Door we love to follow trends, but we create trends to follow. #fashionmakesfutures ” Susan Ryder – Open Door Manager
This shoot came together in just 6 days after pulling together our previous shared vision of what an Open Door fashion shoot should look like. We wanted to show colour, texture and clothes on real people enjoying them. As Open Door are soon to be opening another space to sell their clothes at Red Brick Vintage Hangar it had to be around the Baltic Triangle where we knew the clothes would come to life with the wealth of vibrant street art. We wanted a unique and creative venue to host us and Constellations was exactly what needed. Open Door e-mailed them and we all held our breath! Amazingly, they messaged back straight away with a definite yes. They were brilliant and let us have free reign of their incredible space.
Hugest thanks to Constellations, the phenomenal team at Open Door who styled and arranged all of these outfits and to all of our volunteers who gave up their time and agreed to model for us. It started to pour with rain halfway through the shoot and not a single person raised any concern about going outside and embracing the weather. The true spirit of amazing people, an amazing shop and an amazing charity.
